Facebook Lets Users Negotiate With the Feed
· New York time
Facebook is adding a chatbot that allows users to influence their recommendations, joining a broader platform interest in conversational controls. Its Your Algorithm system gives people another way to describe what they want to see instead of relying only on watching, skipping and other behavioral signals. For creators, explicit audience preferences could become another factor in discovery. The practical implication is not that every post needs to flatter a chatbot. Relevance includes what people consciously request, not merely what briefly stops their thumb during an unguarded moment near the kettle. For users, the attraction is understandable. Explaining a preference in words may feel clearer than spending weeks teaching a feed that one watched a plumbing video because the sink was broken, not because drains had become a central identity. The tradeoff is effort. A recommendation tool is useful when a small instruction produces a meaningful improvement. It becomes less appealing if leisure requires a carefully drafted statement of personal interests. The feed should not need a cover letter. People came to relax, not to submit a quarterly strategic plan explaining why they would like fewer videos about the appliance they already repaired.
