Penalty Totals Refuse an International Merger
· New York time
Bank of America's quarter reflected a $1.2 billion Treasury fine, while the UK's CMA imposed £6 million in combined fines on three other businesses over misleading sales tactics. The penalties involve different authorities, currencies and cases. They therefore cannot become a meaningful single enforcement total just by sharing a page. Nor does the combined UK figure describe the fine imposed on any one firm. The common financial feature is that regulatory penalties have costs. Beyond that, the calculator needs proper labels, not a sudden enthusiasm for international consolidation.
