Netflix plans to cut 1,000 jobs, while Bank of America hired 1,000 contractors to patch software flaws exposed by Anthropic's Mythos. The matching numbers describe opposite staffing actions and different forms of work. Netflix's reduction represents around 6% of its worldwide workforce. The bank's figure concerns contractors brought in for a patching effort. Neither report establishes a transfer of workers between the companies or a neat cancellation of employment effects. Together, they show why a headcount needs its accompanying noun and verb. Permanent job losses at one business and contractor hiring at another cannot be added into a reassuring story that everybody has simply changed desks. The number 1,000 is working two shifts in the business pages. Human resources would prefer it submitted separate paperwork.
