Biotech Attempts to Make the Model More Human
· New York time
Intero Biosystems is selling lab-grown human intestines to drugmakers as regulators push for alternatives to animal testing. The startup is also looking to scale production and expand its organoid technology. The commercial proposition puts human biological material into a research workflow rather than asking a different species to represent every relevant question. A miniature intestine is still a model, not an entire person who has somehow misplaced the rest of their appointments. For drugmakers, the useful question is where that model can improve testing. Regulatory interest creates an opening for alternatives, while each tool still needs a well-defined role. Biology has not become office stationery simply because a company can sell a smaller version of it.
