Citizen Lab Documents an Attack Without a Click

Citizen Lab says it has documented the first publicly confirmed case of zero-click mercenary spyware delivered through targeted online advertising. It calls the technique AdFection. Researcher Bill Marczak describes concrete technical evidence of an attack route previously discussed as a possibility. The advertisement's call to action apparently became unnecessary. The important security feature is the absence of a required click. Advice about avoiding suspicious links cannot, on its own, address an attack delivered without that choice. The finding puts attention on advertising delivery systems and platform defenses rather than solely on a target's browsing judgment. This does not turn every advertisement into a confirmed attack. It does give investigators a documented reason to inspect machinery usually sold as an exceptionally precise way to deliver sneakers.
