Itaú Brings Conversation to Banking, With Governance Alongside

Itaú is applying its AI First strategy to customers and employees through ia.i, a conversational interface, and IARA, a governance platform, according to an OpenAI customer account. The effort puts generative AI inside one of Brazil’s heavily regulated sectors, where making an interaction easier cannot be the only design objective. A conversational interface can reduce the work of navigating a bank’s services. Governance addresses a different question: how the organization manages the technology behind those interactions. The pairing matters because a friendly answer and a dependable banking process are not interchangeable products. The dream is a bank interface that understands ordinary language without requiring customers to learn the internal taxonomy of departments. Nobody wakes up eager to discover which submenu owns their question. But fluency can also make a system feel more authoritative than its role warrants. Useful design needs clear boundaries between explaining something, helping someone navigate and carrying out an action. The broader test is whether AI removes friction without making responsibility harder to locate. A customer should not need a detective board to determine where a conversation became a decision. Banking already has enough forms; the opportunity is to make the right steps clearer, not to replace a maze of buttons with a very personable maze of sentences.
