The Neural Network Might Have Labels After All
· New York time
A new essay has researchers debating whether neural networks are more readable than commonly assumed, including the proposition that about 90 percent of neurons serve a clear function. If supported, that would have important implications for interpreting model behavior and investigating safety. The attraction is obvious: understanding internal mechanisms could offer more than judging a model solely by its outward answers. But a proposed map still needs to prove that its labels help explain the territory. The comic temptation is to imagine opening a model and finding neatly marked drawers: arithmetic, grammar, misplaced confidence. Real interpretability has to earn that clarity rather than borrow it from office furniture. The substantive question is whether the approach yields explanations that researchers can test and use, not simply a more reassuring picture of a very complicated machine.
