Street Fighter Enters the Adaptation Arena

Cast members Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji and Callina Liang are discussing the latest Street Fighter movie adaptation, promoted as made by fans for fans. The familiar video-game franchise brings recognition and expectations into the same arena. Fan enthusiasm can help a production understand what audiences value. A film must also function for people who have not arrived carrying a mental archive of moves and characters, ready to audit every costume from the back row. Adaptation has to reward recognition without making it an entrance exam. A reference can earn a smile, but it still needs a scene to live in and something to do once it gets there. “Made by fans” is an appealing promise. The harder assignment is making a movie that can take the controller away and still keep everyone watching.
