Managed Futures Apply for the Job Bonds Already Have
· New York time
A CNBC market commentary argues that investors should reconsider bond allocations and examine managed futures exposure instead. It presents the hedge fund approach as a possible alternative to money remaining unproductive for a long stretch. The argument belongs to a recurring financial debate: whether an established portfolio role should be filled by a different strategy when conditions become uncomfortable. That is a consequential discussion, but a persuasive description of one approach does not make every alternative interchangeable. Bonds and managed futures involve different mechanisms and risks. The useful question is what job an allocation is supposed to perform, not which label sounds most energetic during a disappointing period. Calling an asset “dead money” gives the debate dramatic lighting without finishing the analysis. Financial marketing has a reliable gift for making patience sound like a personal failing. In its more theatrical form, a portfolio becomes an office where every holding must walk briskly while carrying a document. The substantive issue is fit, including complexity, costs and behavior under different conditions. A strategy should not win the role merely because its name contains a verb. “Managed” and “futures” sound busy, but busy is not itself a portfolio objective.
