Streaming's Next Episode Requires an Organizational Chart

Netflix has brought in Peter Rice to run content, drawing on his experience across scripted and unscripted television, live sports, prestige programming and theatrical distribution. The appointment places a broad entertainment background inside a business competing for viewers’ attention. The range is important because “content” is an efficient word for several very different enterprises. A live event, a film and a television series do not ask the same things of production or distribution. Grouping them together makes a tidy menu, not necessarily a simple management problem. For a streaming service, the challenge is connecting those choices to a coherent offering. More categories can provide more ways to attract audiences, but breadth alone does not explain what viewers will choose or why they will return. The job can resemble being handed a remote with every button labeled “strategy.” Press one and a prestige drama appears; press another and an entirely different operational headache enters the room. Rice brings experience across those different forms of entertainment. The management challenge is putting that range to work inside one service, while viewers continue their own nightly decision-making process. An impressive organizational chart still has to compete with someone scrolling for twenty minutes and then going to bed.
