Rent Returns, This Time With an Anniversary
· New York time
Rent is back in London's West End for its 30th anniversary revival, CBS reports. The musical's return gives audiences another opportunity to encounter a work whose familiar measure of a year, 525,600 minutes, has now accumulated three decades of cultural mileage. Anniversary revivals combine two attractions: the chance to revisit something meaningful and the possibility of seeing it performed anew. Nostalgia brings people to the door, but a live production still has to hold their attention once they sit down. The theater has a useful advantage over many anniversary products. It cannot merely print a commemorative label and assume the evening is complete. People must actually perform the work. Thirty years also gives the title a stubborn everyday resonance. Some words age into historical curiosities. Rent continues to arrive with extraordinary punctuality, even when the tenant would prefer an extended interval.
