Smart Mug Discovers Revolutionary Interface Called the Mug
· New York time
Ember’s new Mug 3 lets drinkers change their beverage temperature without opening an app. The temperature-controlled cup continues the company’s effort, begun with its first smart mug in 2016, to prevent coffee and tea from turning lukewarm while their owners get distracted. The practical advance is small but revealing. A connected object becomes more convenient when one of its routine functions stops requiring a second connected object. The phone can remain on the table, where it is already busy supplying the distractions that made the heated mug attractive in the first place. This is a useful test for smart-home design: does the technology shorten a task, or merely give that task an account? Adjusting a drink should not feel like checking in for a flight whose destination is slightly warmer tea. Ember’s change points toward a quietly radical future in which objects carry their own controls. A lamp might entertain the possibility of a switch. A doorbell could consider a button. The mug, meanwhile, can focus on its demanding core business: keeping one drink pleasant while a human forgets about it for entirely unrelated reasons.
