Kitchen Display Moves Into the Most Competitive Room

Apple introduced its HomeView smart display with an advertisement centered on the messy morning routine of a family of five. Rather than presenting immaculate technology in an immaculate room, the launch imagery places the device amid domestic commotion, where most household technology must eventually earn its counter space. The Verge’s examination of the product raises a concern for online recipe writers: what happens when another interface stands between a reader and the site that created the useful material? Convenient access and a sustainable publishing business are not automatically the same achievement. For a household, the attraction of a central screen is obvious. A kitchen already contains schedules, questions and people asking where something is while standing directly beside it. A display can promise order without making the family become orderly first. For publishers, however, convenience raises a distribution question. Who gets the audience relationship when information arrives through somebody else’s device? The kitchen counter may look like a small piece of real estate, but it sits at the intersection of attention, commerce and dinner. Even the toaster might eventually need a strategy for maintaining its direct relationship with toast.
