Before Agents Haggle, Lawyers Discuss Their Indoor Voices

Anthropic is consulting law firms about negotiation norms for AI agents that could bargain over prices, resolve complaints or improve contracts for users. It is also hiring lawyers and humanities scholars as Conceptual Reasoning Fellows to improve Claude in areas where reliable training data is scarce. The effort addresses what automated representatives should consider acceptable when pursuing someone else’s interests. A successful negotiation is not simply the most aggressive request delivered at maximum speed. Authority, fairness and the ability to maintain a working relationship all matter. Software that treats every interaction as a contest to extract the largest concession could make routine commerce feel like an endless closing argument. The appeal for users is obvious. Few people enjoy spending an afternoon disputing a bill. But delegating that task means deciding how much discretion the agent has and what kinds of tactics it should avoid. The future could feature two tireless assistants negotiating a modest discount while their human owners age through several subscription cycles. Consulting lawyers before widespread agent bargaining recognizes that fluent language is not the same as sound representation. The agent needs more than a persuasive paragraph. It needs boundaries that survive the temptation to win, preferably before it starts describing a coupon dispute as a historic confrontation.
