Automation Frees Up Time to Discuss the Automation
· New York time
Anthropic reports that its workforce has become less junior and that employees are spending more time in meetings. The company says its heavily AI-integrated workplace could offer clues about changes in work organization, hiring and labor demand. Its experience is informative, though it does not establish that every employer will follow the same path. The combination deserves attention. Fewer junior hires raises questions about how organizations build future expertise, while more meeting time suggests that automating production does not necessarily automate coordination. Someone still has to decide what the work is for. For employees, the practical stakes extend beyond whether a tool drafts faster. They include entry routes into careers, opportunities to learn and the balance between making things and aligning with colleagues about making things. The promise was an empty calendar and a completed task list. The office may instead discover that faster output creates more material to discuss. A document produced in seconds can still support a full hour of comments. Anthropic’s report offers a workplace observation rather than a universal forecast. The future of work may arrive with remarkable technical capability and a very familiar invitation: could everyone find thirty minutes to agree on the next steps?
