Replit Changes the Default, Keeps Another Door Open
· New York time
Replit CEO Amjad Masad clarified that OpenAI would replace Anthropic as the platform’s default model provider. Claude will remain available to customers. The change concerns which provider users encounter by default, not the complete removal of an alternative. Defaults matter because many people accept the option a product presents first. A provider can therefore gain an important position in the workflow without every customer making a deliberate comparison. Availability and prominence are different kinds of access. For users, the useful question is how the default fits their particular work. The announcement alone does not establish that one model is better at every task, and keeping Claude available preserves a route for customers who prefer it. For the model business, the change highlights the power of the application layer. A platform’s choice can shape everyday usage just as surely as a model launch, even if the user never reads a benchmark table. It resembles a cafeteria announcing a new standard sandwich while assuring everyone the old one remains somewhere on the menu. Choice survives, but habit has already joined the lunch line. In software, a small selection made upstream can become thousands of decisions that users never consciously make themselves.
