The Podcast Host Is Doing Well in the Friendship Comparison
· New York time
A survey commissioned by Amazon's Wondery, which has a commercial interest in podcast audiences, found that 81% of regular fans of creator-hosted podcasts trust the host as much as or more than friends. Forty-four percent said more. SmithGeiger surveyed 3,000 U.S. adults in June 2026. Those findings concern surveyed fans, not everyone who encounters a microphone. They illustrate the potential commercial significance of repeated, familiar listening, with obligations when recommendations enter the conversation. Actual friends face an obvious competitive disadvantage: they rarely arrive with professional audio, a consistent release schedule and an edited account of their thoughts. They also expect you to help them move, a notoriously weak audience-retention strategy.
