Managed Futures Apply for a Seat Beside Bonds

A CNBC financial analysis argues that managed futures exposure may deserve consideration as an alternative to some bond allocation. That is a comparison of portfolio approaches, not proof that one will outperform another. Different strategies can involve different sources of return, risk and complexity. Replacing a familiar label with a sophisticated one does not make those tradeoffs disappear. A portfolio cannot improve merely by changing its furniture because the brochure says dynamic. The substantive question is what a strategy does, what it costs and how its risks differ from the assets being compared.
