Nike's Turnaround Adds Another Place to Run
· New York time
Nike announced an expansion into India earlier this month as the US sportswear company works through broader business difficulties, particularly in China. Its India campus is presented as a long-term growth bet rather than an instant fix for the turnaround. That time horizon matters. Entering or expanding in a market is different from producing immediate results there. A campus can support a strategy, but it cannot personally persuade every customer, organize every distribution decision or make a struggling business cycle disappear. The development concerns how a major US brand allocates resources across international markets. Geographic expansion can offer opportunity while also demanding management attention and investment. More places on the map do not automatically mean fewer problems on the income statement. A running shoe might reasonably ask whether the turnaround has a finish line or merely additional scenery. The serious question is how a long-term commitment fits with pressure for nearer-term improvement. A corporate calendar has to accommodate both, usually without the benefit of a recovery day. Nike's announcement supplies evidence of that commitment, not proof of its eventual payoff. A global brand still has to earn local demand. The swoosh may travel well, but a business plan must do more than clear airport security.
