Netflix Hires Experience, Which Still Requires No Charging Cable

Netflix has brought in Peter Rice to run content. His background spans film and television, scripted and unscripted programming, live sports, prestige television and theatrical distribution, giving the streaming company leadership experience across several forms of entertainment. That range matters because content is not one interchangeable product. A live event, a continuing series and a film each create different scheduling, production and audience demands. Putting them under a common app does not make their economics identical, any more than placing vegetables and birthday candles in one cart makes them the same department. The business question is how broad experience translates into choices about what to make, acquire and prioritize. A content leader must weigh audience appeal against costs and the strategic role of each offering. Familiarity with many formats can help frame those choices; it cannot abolish them. An executive remote with a button labeled dependable hit would simplify the appointment considerably. The actual job involves judgment before viewers cast their votes with attention. For subscribers, the significance will ultimately be what appears on screen. For the company, the appointment is about managing a creative portfolio whose products cannot be tested quite as neatly as a new billing feature.
