Mamdani Asks Residents Not to Click Accept on Destiny
· New York time
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents Monday night to reject the idea that an AI takeover is inevitable and demand rules that protect the public. He argued that federal authorities have abdicated responsibility. His intervention places AI within ordinary political debate rather than treating it as weather arriving from a server farm. That distinction matters. A technology can improve quickly without every business decision made in its name becoming unavoidable. Deployment, public protections, and accountability involve choices, even when the sales presentation uses a timeline with only one arrow. For residents, the useful question is less whether the future is coming than who gets to set its terms. Regulation can involve tradeoffs, including how to preserve useful tools without asking the public to absorb every experiment's downside. The inevitability pitch has an appealing convenience for its sellers: nobody has to defend a decision if it can be described as gravity. Mamdani is asking people to inspect the pulley system. City politics may not settle national AI policy, but it can challenge the notion that democracy should wait politely in the lobby while the product team finishes deciding what happens next.
