Instagram Would Like the Copies to Stop Multiplying
· New York time
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has said stronger prevention of AI slop is needed, discussing the company's efforts against AI content replication in a weekly question-and-answer session and a Threads post. The issue matters to creators whose original work competes for attention with material that can be reproduced rapidly and at scale. Replication creates a different challenge from ordinary creative influence. A platform may reward output and engagement while also trying to preserve reasons for people to make something distinctive. Those incentives do not automatically align. If producing another near-copy is easier than developing an original idea, a feed can fill quickly without becoming more useful or interesting to the people scrolling through it. The image is a photocopier applying for the employee-of-the-month award because it submitted the most work. The serious question is what the platform recognizes and discourages. A statement of intent is not the same as a clean feed, but acknowledging the problem sets an expectation. Creators need an environment where effort and originality have a chance to matter. Users, meanwhile, should not need a family tree to determine whether five apparently different videos are cousins of the same recycled idea.
