China’s Export Engine Runs Past the Cautious Consumer
· New York time
China’s growth has accelerated as the AI boom helps lift exports, offsetting weak spending at home. Trade tensions and doubts about the AI outlook still cloud the picture, making the development relevant to global suppliers, customers and investors. For U.S. readers, the significance is the connection between technology spending and international production. Demand tied to AI can support export activity even when domestic households are less eager to spend. That is a different economic story from a broad consumer revival. The tension is easy to picture: one part of the economy is carrying boxes out the loading dock while another is still deciding whether anything in the store is necessary. A strong export number does not automatically answer the quieter question at the household checkout. Trade policy adds another complication. Businesses making long-term plans must weigh customer demand alongside rules that can change the economics of crossing a border. The result is growth with several qualifications attached. AI provides momentum, but momentum is not a warranty. The global economy would prefer a simple dashboard light marked good. Instead, it has received a dashboard, a trade-policy appendix and a server that needs more electricity.
