Germany Invites AI Inside, Businesses Still Need to Find It a Desk

Nvidia has announced planned investments in four German startups as Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged businesses to embrace artificial intelligence at an industry summit in Berlin. The plans extend the U.S. chip company's involvement in an international startup ecosystem competing to turn AI enthusiasm into businesses. Political encouragement can set a tone, and investment can support development. Companies still have to decide what a tool does, where it belongs and how to assess its value. Those decisions arrive after the invitation and generally involve fewer opportunities for applause. That is the less photogenic half of adoption. Opening the door to AI is an appealing phrase. Afterward come the ordinary questions about workflows, responsibility and whether the new arrival has actually made a task easier. Nvidia's planned investments put an American technology company inside that effort to build capabilities abroad. They also illustrate how the competition to develop AI businesses extends beyond the countries where the biggest suppliers are based. The ceremonial welcome is the easy part. If AI were a new office colleague, its first day would feature a grand introduction followed by someone quietly asking which recurring meeting it could eliminate. That remains a more demanding test than entering the building.
