Two Weeks to Election Day, Every Message Becomes Urgent
· New York time
U.S. campaigning is intensifying with Election Day two weeks away. The approaching deadline compresses the remaining contest into a period when campaigns have strong incentives to demand attention immediately. For voters, urgency is not the same thing as useful information. A message can insist that it is the most important message yet without adding much to a person's understanding of the choices. The closing stretch turns the American inbox into a competitive endurance event. Every campaign wants to be the final thing a voter reads, which would require all other campaigns to stop, a concession they appear unlikely to volunteer. The calendar supplies enough genuine urgency without every subject line pretending to be a national fire alarm. Somehow, democracy must also leave room for the dentist's appointment reminder.
