ReactOS Finds a New Place to Set Up House

ReactOS has gained NTFS installation support through a new driver, marking a development milestone for the operating-system project. Installation support concerns the foundation beneath everyday software, rather than a visible feature that announces itself every time a user opens a window. That makes it easy to underestimate. An operating system must first be able to establish itself on storage before the more glamorous parts of computing can begin. The front door is rarely the most exciting room, but a house benefits from having one. The useful distinction is between reaching a milestone and declaring every related task finished. Support for installing on a file system is a specific advance. It should be assessed as that advance, not expanded into a promise that every possible workload will now behave perfectly. Infrastructure work often has this publicity problem: its reward is that something previously difficult becomes less remarkable. The best demonstration may be an installer proceeding without giving anyone a story to tell. In an industry fond of calling routine interface changes revolutionary, a storage driver offers a quieter kind of progress. No confetti cannon is required. The files would only have to find somewhere sensible to put the confetti.
