Startup Leaves Infancy, Enters Valuation Ceremony
· New York time
AI assistant startup Town has announced a $108 million Series B co-led by Forerunner Ventures and Menlo Ventures, reaching a unicorn valuation four months after launch. The financing puts a substantial investor assessment behind a very young company. Funding and product usefulness are related questions, not interchangeable answers. A large round gives a startup resources and expectations. It does not, by itself, tell a prospective customer how well an assistant will fit into a particular day's work. That distinction matters in a category crowded with promises to remove effort. The practical contest is not merely whether software can perform a task, but whether relying on it creates less work than checking, correcting and managing it. An assistant that needs constant supervision risks becoming an unusually confident intern with excellent fundraising materials. Town's rapid rise also captures the compressed calendar of the AI market. Four months is barely enough time for some offices to agree on a shared folder structure. In venture capital, it can be enough time to attach a mythical animal to the company description. The next meaningful assessment belongs to use, not mythology. A unicorn is a striking valuation label, but it is not a workflow.
