Your Supplier Would Also Like Your Customers

Anthropic is reportedly struggling to obtain enough computing capacity from cloud providers that increasingly view it as a competitor. The reported squeeze comes as infrastructure spending grows ahead of a planned November initial public offering. The situation exposes a structural tension in the AI business. A model company may depend on cloud firms for the resources needed to serve customers, while those same firms pursue their own AI ambitions. The relationship must accommodate both cooperation and competition, sometimes during the same procurement conversation. For a growing service, securing capacity is not a decorative expense. It affects the ability to deliver the product. For the supplier, allocating scarce resources involves its own commercial priorities. Neither side can solve that tension by calling the relationship an ecosystem often enough. The useful business analysis concerns dependence: who controls a critical input, how many alternatives exist, and how easily a company can change suppliers. A planned public listing adds another audience interested in those answers. Cloud computing sounds weightless until somebody needs more of it. Then it begins to resemble a crowded apartment building where the landlord also runs a competing business and would like to discuss your electricity usage before renewing the lease.
