The Post-Google Playbook Contains Several Actual Jobs
· New York time
Publishers facing declining Google traffic are turning toward subscriptions, AI visibility and newsroom reorganizations. These responses address different parts of the same problem: attracting readers is harder when a familiar source of visits becomes less dependable. Subscriptions seek direct support. AI visibility seeks relevance inside changing discovery systems. Reorganizations attempt to align staff with the audience work now required. None is simply a replacement pipe that can be attached where the old traffic used to enter. The absurd temptation is to rename the audience team and hope the audience receives the memo. More useful change gives people clear responsibilities and readers a reason to return. The business challenge is combining discovery with loyalty. A publisher needs to be findable, but it also needs something worth finding again. Otherwise the new playbook is just the old dependency wearing a fresh presentation template.
