Amazon Prepares a Holiday Workforce the Size of a Large To-Do List
· New York time
Amazon plans to hire 300,000 seasonal workers this year, sharply increasing its holiday hiring. The announcement puts a large number on the labor needed to turn online shopping into actual packages during the busiest retail stretch. For job seekers, seasonal work offers a different proposition from a permanent position. The timing, duties and terms matter at least as much as the size of the headline. Three hundred thousand openings do not become one giant job with an unusually long name badge. For shoppers, the number is a reminder that clicking a button is only the opening scene. The rest of the transaction requires people, movement and coordination. The shopping cart icon remains suspiciously silent about all of this. Holiday retail has perfected the illusion that gifts materialize because someone remembered a password. A hiring announcement this large briefly pulls back the curtain and reveals something less magical and more operational: a seasonal demand for human work. The useful test will be how these jobs fit the people applying for them. A recruitment total measures scale. It does not tell an individual applicant whether a particular shift will fit around school, family or another job. Santa's dashboard would need considerably more columns.
