NASA's Next Research Route Includes Texas Farmland

NASA plans low-altitude research flights over farmland near Amarillo, Texas, from October 22 through November 9 using a Dynamic Aviation A200 aircraft. The flights will measure gaseous and particulate emissions, putting a federal science aircraft above an agricultural landscape rather than beyond the atmosphere. NASA's work is not confined to distant destinations. Research can also require flying close enough to Earth that the scenery includes fields instead of a planetary horizon. There is a pleasing reversal in the setting. An agency associated with leaving the planet is preparing to spend time carefully flying over a small part of it. The view may be less cosmic, but scientific work does not need a galaxy in the background to justify the fuel.
