Reported AI Cloud Talks Reach the Bring-a-Calculator Stage
· New York time
Nscale is in talks to sell Anthropic additional AI computing power in a deal that could be worth about $45 billion, Reuters reports, citing a person familiar with the matter. The discussions concern a second facility at Nscale's Monarch campus in West Virginia, following an August agreement for $45 billion in rented computing capacity there. The proposed second building would deliver 460 megawatts of computing power. It is a potential addition, not a completed purchase or an operating facility. Even the word “additional” now appears to require its own electrical substation. The possible scale illustrates how the AI business depends on access to computing capacity as well as improvements in software. A helpful chatbot may fit inside a small browser window. The commercial arrangements behind that window apparently require a much larger envelope. For Anthropic, securing capacity could support future work and service availability. For Nscale, another major agreement could anchor further development. Those interests can align without making every proposed dollar a signed commitment. Consumers will still judge the services by whether they help with ordinary tasks. That leaves an elegant contrast: negotiations measured in tens of billions, followed by a user asking for a shorter email about parking.
