Japan Sends a Spacecraft for a Very Distant Takeout Order
· New York time
Japan has launched its MMX mission to bring material home from Phobos, a moon of Mars. The spacecraft is expected to attempt up to two landings there in 2029, making the launch the beginning of a long scientific undertaking. Returning samples would let researchers study material on Earth rather than relying only on observations from afar. That gives the mission significance well beyond its launch country. The logistics make ordinary delivery complaints seem modest. This order requires interplanetary travel, careful landing attempts and a return journey. Nobody should select the expedited shipping box.
