AMD Gives Existing Hardware a New Reason to Stay Plugged In

AMD is expanding its FSR 4.1 upscaling technology beyond Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards to Xbox Series X/S consoles, Xbox Ally handhelds, laptops and Radeon RX 6000-series cards. The expansion brings a newer graphics tool to a broader range of machines, including hardware people already own. Upscaling aims to improve the relationship between rendering work and the image viewers see. Its appeal is straightforward: players would rather spend their evening looking at a game than calculating what their graphics hardware cannot comfortably draw. Broader compatibility matters because an upgrade that reaches existing devices has a different household cost from one that begins with replacing them. The best new component can sometimes be the component that does not arrive in a shipping box. Still, support across several hardware categories should not be confused with identical results in every game. A handheld, laptop and living-room console bring different constraints to the same general ambition. The practical question is what the technology delivers in actual play. The comic opportunity belongs to the upgrade cycle itself: after years of being told the future requires a new machine, owners may discover that their old machine has been invited after all.
