Podcasts Add a Members Entrance
· New York time
Spotify is rolling out Memberships, a feature that lets podcast creators sell exclusive content and perks for recurring payments. First previewed at the company's Investor Day in May, it adds a direct subscription relationship to the business of getting people to listen. For creators, the appeal is straightforward: a dedicated fan can support a show repeatedly rather than contribute only another play. For listeners, the decision becomes whether the extra material or benefits justify one more recurring charge in a household already conducting archaeological digs through its subscription statements. Memberships also change the production question. A show needs to decide what belongs in its main offering and what makes a paid tier worthwhile. Put too little behind the membership and the proposition looks thin. Put too much there and the free version can start to resemble a restaurant displaying photographs of dinner. That balance is a creative problem as much as a commercial one. More perks can mean more work, and recurring revenue does not make a week contain more hours. The strongest practical promise is a clearer exchange between a show and its most committed audience. The comic promise is that casual listening may soon require the same household discussion once reserved for choosing an internet provider.
