TikTok's News Growth Finds Some Competition
· New York time
TikTok's popularity as a news source appears to be reaching a plateau, according to Pew Research Center's latest study of Americans' news habits. Twenty percent of Americans regularly get news there, unchanged from last year, while other social platforms captured some news-gathering activity in 2026. For news creators and publishers, the practical issue is distribution. A service that gained attention quickly does not necessarily keep gaining at the same pace. Audience habits can spread across platforms, leaving a publisher with more places to maintain a presence and no corresponding expansion of the workday. The findings also complicate the familiar story that one app will become the inevitable home of everything. People can use different services for different moments, formats and communities. The news consumer is not contractually obliged to remain loyal to the location of yesterday's explainer. One in five Americans is still a substantial audience. TikTok remains part of Americans' news gathering, while the competitive picture becomes less simple. For the people producing the information, that means a familiar balancing act: make the reporting useful, adapt the presentation and avoid confusing a distribution channel with the audience itself. The public may want reliable news, but it has not agreed to receive it from one designated loading dock.
