Data Centers Discover That Having Servers Is Not a Business Plan

HSBC's chief executive has warned that the AI boom will not make every data center a good bet. The facilities house servers supporting AI and cloud computing, placing them at the physical center of a technology story often discussed as though it floats above ordinary economics. The warning distinguishes demand for a broad service from the merits of every project built to supply it. A promising industry can still contain assets with very different costs, customers and competitive positions. That is an important complication for a sector whose buildings can acquire an aura of inevitability simply by containing enough cooling equipment. Concrete does not become strategic merely because the presentation uses a glowing blue font. The underlying business assessment remains familiar: what is being built, who needs it and whether the resulting operation makes economic sense. AI changes the workload; it does not abolish those questions. For lenders and developers, enthusiasm can help mobilize capital, but it cannot perform the work of project selection. A campus full of servers is physical capacity, not a certificate of future success. Even the cloud, it turns out, eventually has to meet someone from accounting on the ground.
