GM Beats Estimates, Then Tidies the Guidance Drawer
· New York time
General Motors beat Wall Street's third-quarter earnings expectations, narrowed its 2026 earnings guidance and raised its adjusted automotive free cash flow outlook. The update combines a favorable quarterly comparison with a revised view of the year. Those measures serve different purposes. An earnings beat compares results with expectations, while guidance communicates management's current outlook. Cash flow adds another view of the business rather than merely repeating the profit figure. Financial reporting would be simpler if every useful number agreed to wear the same name. It would also be considerably less useful. For GM, the practical assessment involves reading those changes together without flattening them into a single celebratory adjective. Even a strong quarter needs more than a victory lap around the spreadsheet.
