Data Centers Asked to Offer Something Beyond Being Very Important

President Trump says data centers should consider paying communities a dividend to win support, as worries about AI financing grow. The suggestion puts a direct local benefit into a debate often dominated by the scale and promise of artificial intelligence investment. A community dividend is an appealing phrase because it sounds like a tangible answer to an otherwise expansive sales pitch. But the substance would depend on the arrangement: what is paid, to whom, under what terms and in relation to which local concerns. The proposal does not make those questions disappear. It makes them the next questions. A benefit offered to gain support is not the same thing as proof that every concern about a project has been addressed. For American communities considering data center development, the broader issue is bargaining power. The promise of participating in the future can be difficult to assess when the future's representatives arrive with much larger presentation screens. The comic reversal is welcome: after years of being told that everyone must support AI because it will create immense value, communities are being invited to ask whether a little of that value might take a form more locally recognizable than another enthusiastic slide about the cloud.
