Musk Suggests Putting the Car Company Inside the Rocket Conversation

Elon Musk says there is “a lot to be gained” by combining SpaceX and Tesla. The proposed combination would unite two enormous businesses in what the BBC describes as potentially the biggest merger in history. That is an expression of interest, not a completed transaction. An enthusiastic assessment cannot do the work of establishing terms, explaining a valuation or showing how a combined company would operate. Even very large ambitions eventually encounter a document that needs actual numbers entered into the blank spaces. The business assessment would have to extend beyond the convenience of finding both companies under the same billionaire. Investors would need to consider governance and what they would actually own. Combining businesses does not automatically combine their strengths in the proportions shown on a presentation slide. There is an obvious appeal to treating cars and rockets as items awaiting consolidation in a household subscription bundle. Unfortunately, an orbital launch system is not the premium trim package on a sedan. The proposal illustrates how modern corporate ambition can make even a very large company seem insufficiently large. For now, the combination exists as a possibility with an impressive superlative attached. The organizational chart has not yet earned permission to become a map of reality.
