GM is closing its Brownstown Battery Assembly Plant near Detroit, but the reported reason is not the automaker's electrification strategy. That distinction matters when a facility's name seems to offer a ready-made explanation. A plant closure deserves a specific business assessment, not automatic promotion into proof of an industry-wide reversal. The word “battery” cannot do all the analytical work. Every factory does not double as a referendum on the entire vehicle market. Sometimes the sign outside a building is simply a sign, not an economist available for interviews.
