Slate Displays a Truck and the Considerable Distance to Scale
· New York time
Slate has opened its first showroom as its planned $25,000 electric truck approaches production. The location gives prospective buyers a place to encounter the company's promise, while mass production remains the test of whether that promise becomes a durable vehicle business. That distinction matters in an industry where the showroom experience can be completed long before the manufacturing challenge. A carefully lit vehicle demonstrates what a company wants to sell. It does not, by itself, demonstrate how consistently the company can build it. The proposed price gives the truck an accessible pitch in a market where affordability attracts attention. But a price attached to a coming product and an established supply of finished vehicles are different milestones. Consumers have good reason to care about both. There is something perfectly modern about visiting a physical room to inspect a future possibility. The lighting is real, the floor is real and the remaining industrial work is also extremely real. The useful business assessment will come from execution rather than showroom polish. Until then, the display performs its proper function: making a plan tangible. It cannot perform the factory's function, however much everyone enjoys the reassuring presence of an actual door handle.
