The Next Chip May Be Less Committed to Being Rigid
· New York time
A new generation of chips is thinner and more flexible than traditional silicon technology. That change concerns a basic physical property of computing hardware, not simply another round of claims about faster performance. Flexibility could broaden the kinds of designs engineers consider, although a bendable component is not automatically a finished product or a replacement for every conventional chip. The useful distinction is between a material capability and the applications built around it. The appeal is immediate: after decades of demanding that humans adapt to rigid devices, computing hardware is exploring compromise. The chip may finally be willing to bend, even if the product warranty will presumably retain its traditional posture.
